Nonlinear optical properties of regioregular main‐chain polyesters

We have prepared new polyesters containing quadratic, nonlinear optical (NLO) active chromophores covalently incorporated into the main chain. In these polymers, the sequence of the chromophore units along the main chain is rigorously head to tail. All the polyesters are processable, both in the melt and in solution. For one polyester, a full second‐order NLO characterization has been performed. An out‐of‐resonance d₃₃ coefficient of 21 pm/V at 1368 nm has been measured. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Induced focusing and conversion of a Gaussian beam into an elliptic Gaussian beam

We have presented an investigation of the induced focusing in Kerr media of two laser beams, the pump beam and the probe beam, which could be either Gaussian or elliptic Gaussian or a combination of the two. We have used variational formalism to derive relevant beam-width equations. Among several important findings, the finding that a very week probe beam can be guided and focused when power of both beams are well below their individual threshold for self-focusing, is a noteworthy one. It has been found that induced focusing is not possible for laser beams of any wavelength and beam radius. In case both beams are elliptic Gaussian, we have shown that when power of both beams is above a certain threshold value then the effective radius of both beams collapses and collapse distance depends on power. Moreover, it has been found that induced focusing can be employed to convert a circular Gaussian beam into an elliptic Gaussian beam.     

A complete boundary integral formulation for compressible Navier–Stokes equations

A complete boundary integral formulation for compressible Navier–Stokes equations with time discretization by operator splitting is developed using the fundamental solutions of the Helmholtz operator equation with different order. The numerical results for wall pressure and wall skin friction of two‐dimensional compressible laminar viscous flow around airfoils are in good agreement with field numerical methods. Euler characteristic and related measures for random geometric sets

By an elementary calculation we obtain the exact mean values of Minkowksi functionals for a standard model of percolating sets. In particular, a recurrence theorem for the mean Euler characteristic recently put forward is shown to be incorrect. Related previous mathematical work is mentioned. We also conjecture bounds for the threshold density of continuum percolation, which are associated with the Euler characteristic.     

Positive and Nontrivial Solutions for the Urysohn Integral Equation

We establish new criteria for the existence of either positive or nonzero solutions of the Urysohn integral equation. We also discuss the existence of an interval of positive eigenvalues and sufficient conditions for the existence of at least a positive eigenvalue with a nonzero or positive eigenfunction for the Urysohn integral operator. Among others, we employ techniques based on fixed point index theory for compact maps, which are new for this type of equation.     

On the Linear Complexity Profile of Nonlinear Congruential Pseudorandom Number Generators with Dickson Polynomials

Linear complexity and linear complexity profile are important characteristics of a sequence for applications in cryptography and Monte-Carlo methods. The nonlinear congruential method is an attractive alternative to the classical linear congruential method for pseudorandom number generation. Recently, a weak lower bound on the linear complexity profile of a general nonlinear congruential pseudorandom number generator was proven by Gutierrez, Shparlinski and the first author. For most nonlinear generators a much stronger lower bound is expected. Here, we obtain a much stronger lower bound on the linear complexity profile of nonlinear congruential pseudorandom number generators with Dickson polynomials.
